Artist Trading Cards: Small Wonders

Artist Trading Cards, or ATCs, are miniature works of art used throughout Europe and America as art training tools. Historically, artists would trade cards between themselves to study each others’ techniques and explore new art movements. Artists often traded their cards, their work on the front and bio on the back, with art collectors in exchange for room, board, and art supplies.

The current ATC move is to make  art readily available to everyone. ATCs can be any medium or any style. The only requirements are their size: 2-1/2” x 3-1/2” and that they are not sold, only traded with others. In order to bend the rules, some artists have taken the ATC concept and created small works of art that can be purchased, known as ACEOs: Artist Cards, Editions and Originals.
