Social Service Unit

The Social Service Unit provides comprehensive services to both ambulatory and homebound individuals who reside on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The program include assistance with benefits and entitlements, advocacy, supportive counseling, daily money management, end-of-life planning. Referrals are made to supportive services including home care services, home-delivered meals, and socialization opportunities that enable the older individual to remain in their home safely and with quality-of-life. Our catchment area is 57th to 96th Street, Fifth Avenue to East River.

Support & Discussion Groups

The Carter Burden Center offers the following groups:

Chinese Language Group
The Chinese Language Group was developed in response to the changing demographics within our catchment area. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Asian individuals 18 years and older residing in Community District 8 increased 54.6% between 1990-2000. Some of our Asian clients indicated that they were no longer able to travel to Chinatown in lower Manhattan to socialize with other people who speak their language. The group meets every second Thursday of the month 2:00 – 3:00. Green tea and Chinese sweets are provided.

Please call Jian Ping Zhang at 212-879-7400, Ext. 106 for further information.

Women’s Discussion Group
The Women’s Support Group, which meets on Wednesdays from 2-3 PM, was created to give women over the age of 60 a safe and creative space to come together to discuss a variety of topics. The topics include: women’s issues, current events, fashion, love/dating, hobbies, poetry, etc. Welcoming and supportive, this group provides an opportunity to learn from one another’s experiences and opinions. We encourage socialization and it’s an easy way to meet women with similar interests!

The Bird Group
The Bird Group explores Central Park in the Spring and Fall when the migrant birds coming through the park are beautiful and numerous.  Led by “The Bird Nerd”, participants learn about migration patterns, how to find birds and the identity of the various birds that stop over to rest in the park as well as year round residents.

The majority of the walk occurs in the Ramble.  With its many beautiful trees, it’s an environment that is suitable for birds.  The walk through the Ramble requires an ability to navigate some hills and some uneven ground.   The walk itself is leisurely and lasts about 2 hours with opportunities to rest.  Suitable walking shoes are required and binoculars are optional.   Seniors 60 and over, of all birding levels, are welcome.
